Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl is closing in on his first signing for the Scottish Premiership giants in the January transfer window.

The Daily Record reports that the Gers are on the verge of sealing a deal to sign Sturm Graz central midfielder Tochi Chukwuani for a fee of £4m to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

There are still steps to take before the Light Blues can officially confirm that the Danish star is their player, but the move is heading in the right direction after the two clubs agreed a fee for his services.

What Tochi Chukwuani could bring to Rangers

Rangers will be bolstering the physicality and defensive quality of their midfield by bringing the 22-year-old to Ibrox before the end of the January transfer window.

The Denmark U21 international is a combative midfielder who will be tough in the tackle and impressive in duels if he can carry his form over from the Austrian Bundesliga this season.

Chukwuani, as shown in the table above, ranks incredibly highly among his positional peers in the Bundesliga in a host of defensive and physical metrics, which speaks to his ability out of possession.

These statistics suggest that Rohl is beefing up his midfield by signing a true enforcer to sit in front of the back four and protect the side from being opened up too easily.

Whilst Chukwuani looks set to be a decent addition to the squad as a defensive midfielder, there is another reported Rangers target who could be an even better signing.

The Rangers target who would be a better signing than Chukwuani

It remains to be seen how busy the Scottish giants want to be in the January transfer window, as they remain in the Premiership title race, but they have been linked with another central midfielder alongside Chukwuani, and he would be a better signing.

It was recently reported that the Gers are one of the clubs interested in a deal to sign Hacken star Silas Andersen, and it was said that they were the favourites for his signature, ahead of Glasgow rivals Celtic.

The Danish midfielder, who is reportedly valued at the best part of £9m (£8.6m), produced impressive performances in the Allsvenskan for Hacken in 2025 and could offer more to the Gers than Chukwuani because of his all-round game.

Andersen, who is a year younger than Chukwuani, scored two goals, created three ‘big chances’, and assisted two goals in the league in 2025, per Sofascore, whilst the Sturm Graz star has scored one goal and failed to provide any ‘big chances’ or assists in the Bundesliga this term.

This suggests that the £9m-rated star, who is also a Denmark U21 international, could offer more to the team as an offensive threat, as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a central midfield position.

On top of his quality on the ball, Andersen, as you can see in the table above, is also a combative midfielder who looks to win duels and make tackles on a regular basis to win the ball back for his team.

Andersen, who was dubbed “relentless” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could provide even more defensive quality than specialist defensive midfielder Chukwuani, with a much higher aerial duel success rate and more tackles and clearances per game.

Hacken’s valuation of nearly £9m for the central midfield star reflects his superior performances in comparison to Chukwuani, who is set to sign for Rangers for £4m.

Andersen’s statistics suggest that he would be worth the price because he is young, performing well, and has the quality to provide an impact at both ends of the pitch from a midfield position.

Rangers "in talks" to sell Ibrox dud who's been a worse signing than Dowell

Rangers are reportedly looking to move on from a flop who has been an even worse signing than Kieran Dowell.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether or not the Light Blues will be in the market for another midfielder, Andersen could be an even better signing than Chukwuani if they are.
