THE BIGGER PICTURE
Callaghan's exit would seem to come at a turbulent time for the USMNT. Berhalter's job has been called into question after the Copa America hosts failed to make it out of their group. Callaghan had previously served as interim boss for the USMNT from May-July 2023, going undefeated in a seven-game spell at the helm.

WHAT BJ CALLAGHAN SAID
In a statement announcing his new job, Callaghan voiced support for the USMNT setup: "While I am thrilled to embark on this new journey, it is bittersweet to leave a team and staff that I believe in so deeply. I have full confidence in the exceptional coaching staff we have in place and know the team is in great hands. As we approach the 2026 World Cup, I'll be cheering on the team every step of the way. Thank you to everyone at U.S. Soccer for the support and camaraderie – it has truly been an honor."

WHAT NEXT FOR CALLAGHAN?
Callaghan will leave the national team immediately before moving into his new post at the end of the month. More broadly, it seems that a potential candidate for Berhalter's job – should US Soccer opt to make a change – is now off the table.
